Comedy and Porn mix:

It's actually an interesting mix when comedy and I guess porn mix, truly I never found it actually exciting, I can honestly say I watched it after the first episode because of the story and comedy value. Basically this premiered as a late night show on Cinemax around 6 months ago, about 6 college students living together and the various hijinks they cause and the experiences they go through.

If your looking for porn this might not be for you. If you don't mind an OK story and really college hijinks and problems that a person can relate to as a college student, I'd suggest it.

Just don't go into this expecting porn or anything along those lines, it's much closer to a comedy/drama with the occasionally sex scene mixed in advancing the overall story.

I Rate it high not because of the sex, but mostly because the story had me laughing the whole time.

Worthwhile soft porn

Based on a novel by Dominique Aury, Story of O is an arty version of the classic story of S&M. Despite the sadomasochistic tone, the film is actually rather soft; but while it may not delight fans of the more hardcore pornography, the way that director Just Jaeckin tried to elevate the story above what it is and make a 'classic' film, as well as the fact that parts of it actually are erotic means that this is at least a fairly successful piece of softcore porn. The film focuses on a woman simply named 'O' (which is somewhat ironic because it sounds like a James Bond codename and the lead is played by Moonraker Bond girl Corinne Clery). She goes out with a man named Rene, who decides to take her to a retreat where she is trained in sexual perversion. It's clear that the director obviously valued his subject material and although the film fails as a classy drama; the way that it's filmed does give some extra interest. The acting is actually fairly decent, with Corinne Clery standing out alongside Anthony Steel and Udo Kier. There's a fair amount of sexual perversion involved although the film does not go into great detail with most of it; but we do get plenty of whipping and lesbianism at least. I have to say that I preferred Gerard Damiano's 'The Story of Joanna', which was also based on the classic French novel; but this is decent enough stuff and worthwhile for one viewing.

Ice-cold eroticism

There isn't much about this movie that is warm or inviting. The central relationship between Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke is there to be busted up, but director Adrian Lyne isn't very concerned with the characters anyway--his thing seems to be chilly atmospherics and stylish furniture. Sure, the first sex with the blindfold and ice cubes is tantalizing, but the scene seems chopped short (presumably so as not to offend us prudish Americans!). All the sexual scenes are like that: the clinch, the brief flash of nudity, end of scene. Interest wanes after the viewer becomes satisfied with Basinger's milky beauty and Rourke's handsome panache, but their surroundings are sterile (his apartment, her gallery). There are two or three playful moments (such as the food frenzy in front of the refrigerator), but mostly it's all talk and little action, and unintentionally funny bits like Rourke attempting to get Basinger in the mood by playing Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit"!

Intrigued by her friend Sophie, who tells her about her sexual experimentations, she will find, through various encounters, new pleasures and new experiences, whether physical or spiritual.

Brisseau's most accomplished work so far

À l'aventure's beginning is pretty dreadful. We meet two female coworkers sitting in a park. One responsible one, the other out of it, who just stares in front of her and doesn't even look her friend in the eyes. The loony one, Sandrine, isn't satisfied in bed by her husband and admits to him that she cheats--by pleasuring herself! The shock! Eventually she quits her job and becomes more adventurous. She picks up a stranger in a café and sleeps with him. He's a psychologist. We get a couple more episodes of her in the park. An older guy sits next to her and starts pondering about life, about the stars, about astrophysics, about life. His thoughts at first are pretty ordinary but become deeper and more interesting in time.

The psychologist introduces Sandrine to a friend/patient who tells them that she likes being slapped on the butt by some guy. It's ecstatic for her. She invites them to a butt slapping session. The guy introduces them to another one his girl, Mina.

The girls who become interested in psychology because of a speech the psychologist gives on hysteria- where repressed psychological events manifest themselves physically, and now want to see the him perform hypnosis on them all. During the session all three girls become aroused and enjoy each other.

Later he does another session on Mina who sees a nun experiencing religious ecstasy and levitating. Now things become interesting...

À l'aventure is the first movie by Brisseau that has an interesting story. But he doesn't take advantage of it. It is still plagued by endless dialog, pointless scenes, behaviors that make no sense. The old guy turns out to have been a physics teacher who went to the East and ended up being a cab driver. He's more or less a guru figure to Sandrine even though he doesn't have anything conclusive to teach.

The issue/question of the female orgasm is something the French can't seem to get their minds around. Here too we are treated to conversations that belong in a movie about victorian times.

Carole Brana who plays Sandrine is just gorgeous in a regular sort of way, not some fake bombshell. The erotic scenes are few, short, and not as stunning as the ones in The Exterminating Angels. Unfortunate since sexual pleasure is at the center of this movie. But in turn, it gives you something to think about. The idea that the search for ultimate pleasure could be related to mysticism is provocative and intriguing. À l'aventure has a fascinating story to tell that deserved a fresher more daring approach than what Brisseau gives us here.

This irony follows her to work because she is a couples counselor who frequently has to deal with the sexual issues other couples have. Two of her patients are Jamie and James, a gay couple who have been monogamous for five years and counting. James wants to bring other men in to the relationship, and his own history with depression may hint at an ulterior motive. Ceth (pronounced Seth) may be the perfect addition to their family, but Caleb, a voyeur from across the street, may have his own ideas about that. Sophia visits Severin, a dominatrix with secrets of her own to reveal.

Explicit, and that's a good thing

What everyone will hear about "Shortbus" is that the sex is real and explicit. Yes, this is all true. But so is the emotional journey the characters go through.

Far from being crude or offensive, Shortbus is fresh, insightful, celebratory -- and, most importantly, focused on the fully realized people, not just the bodies, who bare their flesh and feelings on screen. Like Michael Winterbottom, who made the explicit "9 Songs," writer/director John Cameron Mitchell says he wants to show true human sexuality as part of his story. Unlike "9 Songs," which seemed to focus on 1/8 of the full human experience of relationships (concerts and sex), Mitchell's "Shortbus" approaches 9/10 of the authentic experience of being human, being miserable, looking to come to joy, and exploring funny, sensual, and affectionate avenues to get there.
